When I lived in Portland, if someone asked me where the best place for a cocktail was, I'd immediately say Saucebox. Saucebox. NO HESITATION. I'm sorry to say, I now change my stance. Here is my story.
My best friend came in from LA. She is a foodie and not just any foodie. She is a cocktail foodie. She knows all the best LA cocktail bars and, when I was in LA, she took me to many of them. I told her one day I would return the favor.
Fast forward to this weekend, we rent a hotel room in Portland so we can drink and not drive home to my parents house. She says, where should we go? My husband and I looked at each other in agreement and said "Saucebox".
I should have known it had gone downhill when I saw no crowd on a Saturday night. But, I just thought we were lucky and people were out of town. We walked in, quickly grabbed a table, and ordered our drinks.
My husband ordered a Zombie which he said was too sweet. My best friend ordered a Shiso "The Best" Drink which ended up too sour (so sour she didn't drink it at all and it burned her throat). In the end, the only saving grace was the $6.50 Stoli shots. But, really, who can screw up Stoli shots?
We walked out sad with me apologizing profusely to my friend. Next time, I'm checking out Teardrop. I hear they're awesome.
