Stars in Danger: The High Dive
Fox, 8 ET/PT
Is there really nothing to be done about title inflation? Granted, it's clearly too late to get TV networks to ratchet back their incredibly expansive definition of the word "star" - a term they now apply to anyone they put on the air, regardless of whether anyone else has ever heard of them - but we should at least be able to expect a recognizable usage of "danger." These people are diving into a pool under carefully supervised conditions. It's not a risk-free activity, obviously, but the greatest danger posed is to their pride and our brain cells.
ABC, 8 ET/PT
Few shows had a stronger fall than The Middle, which returns from its December break with a special guest: Dave Foley as Brick's therapist. While he tries to teach Brick some social skills, Frankie and Mike battle with an insurance company over damage to their car, an example of the way this excellent series brings the real-world financial struggles of working-class families into its comic universe. If you're not watching The Middle, you're not only missing a very funny comedy; you're missing one of TV's only attempts to paint a portrait of life in the middle-class Middle West that anyone who's ever lived there might actually recognize.
ABC, 9 ET/PT
ABC's equally stellar and much more acclaimed comedy finds the family celebrating the New Year at a Palm Springs hotel. Jay is none too happy about the event, until he runs into one of his favorite stars, Billy Dee Williams.
