Some of the country's best food is served on four wheels

Foodie trends are by definition seasonal and short-lived, but the grassroots rise of street food vendors and food trucks seems to have tapped into something fundamental. The humble hot dog stands and “roach coach” catering trucks of urban America have been joined by a generation of Twitter-savvy gourmets, dishing out everything from Korean tacos to crème brûlée. The mainstreaming of mobile food inevitably led to the “The Great Food Truck” reality show on the Food Network. But as new trucks roll out in cities across the country, there’s clearly no shortage of entrepreneurial and epicurean energy directed toward street cuisine.  Whether it’s via pods in Portland or sidewalk stands on the East Coast, vendors are bringing a DIY excitement to dining.
